Pitlochry & District Choral Society
Join Pitlochry & District Choral Society and Crieff Choral Group for a rare and exhilarating performance of Petite Messe Solennelle by Gioachino Rossini. Gioachino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle (1863) is a witty and deeply expressive late masterpiece, written more than 30 years after his retirement from opera and dubbed one of his péchés de vieillesse (“sins of old age”). Composed in Paris and likely commissioned by Count Alexis Pillet-Will for his wife, the work’s ironic title belies its 80–90 minute scale and vibrant character. Though structured as a traditional Latin Mass, it is richly operatic in style, blending dramatic solos, sparkling choral writing and dance-like rhythms with moments of profound devotion — prompting Rossini to ask, “Have I written sacred music or damned music?” Scored originally for four soloists, small choir, two pianos and harmonium, its intimate, chamber texture heightens both its theatrical flair and heartfelt spirituality, unmistakably reflecting the composer of The Barber of Seville.
